2010 Orillia Perch Festival

This event is one of Canada’s largest registered tagged perched fishing derbies. The live release derby runs from April 17 – May 20 on Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching located in Orillia, Ontario. There are over 60 tagged perch worth $500 each!

TO REGISTER:
Send name, address, phone number & date of birth for each person registering, with a cheque, to Orillia District Chamber of Commerce, 150 Front St. South, Orillia, Ontario, L3V 4S7.

Adults: $15.00 / Children Under 16: $5.00 – GST included.

Your registration form will be on file at Perch Festival Headquarters, Tudhope Park. Please pick up registration before you start fishing.

Cole: Canada’s Youngest Pro Angler

At least, he really knows what he is talking about. I was able to spend a couple of hours fishing with Cole at a camp I was speaking at. We did some worm fishing off some docks at the camp and tied into some Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Perch and Sunfish. I was impressed with the way Cole casted his line out into the water. It was almost like he was trained by a pro. Sure enough, he told me he had once fished with Bob Izumi on one of Mr. Izumi’s fishing shows. Lucky guy!

Anyway, Cole, I would fish again with you anytime! If you come back up to Huntsville let me know – we’ll head out to the nearest lake in “The Lowe”. I enjoyed fishing with you.

For everyone else – take a ‘youngster’ fishing sometime SOON!

A Shorter Wait For Ont. Bass Anglers

I would think that most Ontario anglers would know that we are to follow last year’s fishing regulations. This is because the regulations are being re-written and all parties involved want to make sure they get things right. The new guidelines are expected to be out in January 2008. There are some small changes that the MNR would like us to follow and one of those guidelines impacts bass anglers.

The season for Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, in Ontario,
opens 1 week earlier this year. It opens on June 23, 2007 instead of the last Saturday in June.

Canada:Even The Perch Are Bigger

If there is one kind of fishing I take for granted it has to be perch fishing. Usually, if I hook into one on our local lake I will quickly reel it in and share with it my disgust about wasting my time. People have told me they are great eating. I don’t believe them. Anytime I have hooked into a perch they have been near significant weedbeds and in my mind the perch will taste, well…weedy! Apparently, I am wrong.

There are some folks who ice fish perch on Lake St.Clair and the fishing is awesome. Lake St. Clair is a lake between Ontario, Canada and Michigan in the United States, located about 10 kilometres (6 mi) northeast of Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Approximately 1,114 Square kilometres (430 sq mi) in area, the lake is part of the Great Lakes system; however, due to its relatively small size, it is rarely, if ever, included in enumerations of the Great Lakes. The perch fishing is SO good that people are catching up to 200 of the striped fish. I will assume that is within legal limits. The local intel says that biggest perch are being caught on the Canadian side.

Perch fishing on Lake St. Clair has been good to spectacular for the past couple of weeks. And just as during the summer, the biggest fish are being caught on the Canadian side as far as six miles offshore. Entire Article Here.

There is over a foot of ice in most places and the forecast is that they will be ice fishing well into March.

The lure of choice for these perch is a minnow tipped golden spoon.

Weeds On My Christmas List?!

It is much to late now to add these interesting Christmas gifts to my list. My focus this Christmas was on fly tying equipment and materials. If we got a bonus Christmas day I would be adding artificial weeds to my list.

LaDredge Outdoors, is taking artificial fish habitat to the next level with their products. This must sound like a commercial, but I visited their website and watched numerous video clips of fish in action around their artificial weeds. I thought you may like to see their videos. These mobile weeds would be great for a little ice fishing hole I know about. You could even drop some within casting distance of you favorite Muskoka dock.
