The Great Outdoors and DIY Weekend: Nov 26-28

Live the adventures you read about in Outdoor Canada Magazine on November 26 – 28, 2010. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to meet, and learn, from the magazine’s outdoor celebrities and exhibitors at the International Centre in Mississauga (6900 Airport Road).

The Outdoor Canada Show is one of four jaw-dropping outdoor shows that are colliding under one roof to bring a myriad of technologies, seminars, and multi-media presentations to all aspects of the outdoors. That means you do not have to hunt and fish to get excellent value for your admission dollars. The other 3 shows include the Fall Cottage Life Show, the Explore Adventure & Travel Show, and the Canadian Home Workshop Show.

Admission is currently set to be $15 at the door or $13 dollars online.

On the Saturday of the Outdoor Canada Show, be sure to check out the Fishin’ for Answers Quiz Show that will feature angling greats like Bob Izumi, Angelo Viola, Pete Bowman, Mike Miller, Leo Stakos, Dave Mercer, Ron James, and U.S. legends Roland Martin and Jimmy Houston.

The show’s hub will be the Outdoor Canada Lodge and will be providing filleting demos, sampling of wild game, shore-lunch tips, fly-tying lessons and antique decoy appraisals with expert Steven Lloyd.

Is your ATV ready for a fall hunting trip?

Huntsville’s Redline Outdoors has shared some ATV maintenance tips that will help contribute to the success of your fall hunting adventure.

Basic Maintenance
Change the oil, clean the air filter, check brakes and the tire pressure and give your ATV a good bolt inspection. Put the machine on a stand and wiggle the wheels and axles to make sure the wheel and suspension linkage bearings are tight. All of Redline’s rentals are thoroughly inspected before they are taken out for a trail ride. For some more informative ATV maintenance tips – check out this link from Off Road.com.

Hunt Responsibly
Pay attention to signs, and only use the ATV in areas that are designated for ORV use. Check local regulations, and invest in proper maps (forest service, topographic and the like) that show public and private property.

Take special care to avoid trespassing on private land.

Be respectful when you run into other hunters.

Whatever the access rules, stay out of swampy, muddy marshes and meadows in which your machine will do extensive trail damage to cross. Yes, mudding is good fun, but save that for designated riding areas. When hunting, cross the land with minimal damage and focus on the hunt.

Drive into the hunting area before hunting hours open, and walk on foot during season hours. This will increase your chance of success and minimize disturbance to the area.

Keep your weapon in a scabbard or case. This will protect it from mud and dust.

Nice Nottawasaga Steelhead

Friend to Muskoka Outdoors and fly fishing jedi, Gary, caught this beautiful steelhead in the Nottawasaga River close to Barrie.

The November caught trout was a great end to the season for Gary. It also marks the first time Gary has used a guide for this river and attributes the success of the day to his guide, Graham Bristow. In Gary’s words,

We caught 6 steelies in one day, missed at least 4 hook sets and 2 greater than 8 lbs which let go after jumping. Graham showed me how fish this productive river and the technique is much different than I initially read about.

If you would like an exciting day fishing on a Southern Ontario river, like the Nottawasaga, contact Graham through his website: Angler’s Pro.
