Short Range Elk

“I took this elk on the 8th of October. I had sighted my rifle in at 100,200,300, 400 and even up to 500yds just in case. Wouldn’t you know it I had to take a less than 25 yard shot at this bull that was coming at me.”

Lisa Metheny ElkThis is, at least, how Lisa Metheny starts off her story about this monster, New Mexico elk she shot in early October. Lisa shared the story, behind the elk, with fellow Skinny Moose Media Bloggers (of which I am a part of). I felt my readers would enjoy the picture and the irony of the story she shared.

The rest of the story is:

The weather kicked my butt for a few days with terribly high winds then rain. Although he is broken off and was not the biggest boy I chased I am still so excited over this bull.

After making a quick 2 1/2 mile hike uphill before sun up to try and get ahead of him the sun rose and he was one of the last bulls talking which gave me an opporutnity to get into position. We called him up from the other side of a canyon and he came in about 30-40 yards but was behind some cedars. About that time the cameraman made an awful noise and spooked the elk. Back down the hill and across the canyon he went. Having nothing to loose at this point we tried the “lost cow” call and he was hooked. Back across the canyon and up the ridge in front of me he came. Straight on and this time he was on a mission.

I shot him less than 25 yards in front of me, as he was getting ready to put his head down and take me out:) EXCITING!!!!

Thanks for sharing this story and photo Lisa! I had recently been focusing on sighting in my bow for the 25 – 35 yard range. After reading your story, I may just make sure all is well with my close range peep site!

Fishing and hunting is more about the people you are in the outdoors with, then the fish or game you catch. This is a outdoor truth I learned from fishing and hunting with my father and grandfather at an early age. Whether, I am fishing the back country of a Algonquin Park or the lakes and rivers of my hometown Huntsville, ON the story behind every fish and game animal is better shared with friends. Blogging is the way in which I can share the truths, the teachable moments, and the incredible memories of every outdoors trip.
