B.C. Wolves: The Toothy Anglers
According to Science Daily, wolves (in B.C.) enjoy a change in food venues during a particular time of year. The articles summarizes that,
For most of the year, the wolves tend to eat deer, as one would expect. During the autumn, however, salmon becomes available and the wolves shift their culinary preferences. Entire Article Here
The whole process in their research is fascinating. When you read the article you find that they were able to formulate results from wayward hairstrands of individual wolves. I have heard of other researchers are now calculating wild animals densities simply by rigging hair ‘traps’ in areas where the animals being studied reside. The DNA from the animal’s hair strands help researchers create a database.
The thing to keep in mind is that research demonstrates a cool predator/prey relationship between BC wolves and BC salmon. It now puts some more ‘chips on the table’ to make sure the salmon numbers in BC are maintained and healthy. I don’t think you should paint all wolves with this new brush stroke. Wolves are not becoming fish maniacs. The article clearly says that this menu change occurs in the fall when the salmon fill BC rivers.
Easy targets.
The wolves in my area (Ontario) don’t get the salmon option in our rivers and probably stick to deer.
Great research just the same!
