Moss Boss: Bucketmouth’s Bane

moss-boss.jpgWhen I was 13 years old, my cousin and I discovered a very effective ‘priced to clear” lure called the Moss Boss. A couple of them were sitting in the clearance bin at a local tackle shop. I think the name captured our curiosity.

Moss Boss.

It was like you could hear orchestra drums pounding in suspense as you said those two words.

Moss Boss.

Anyway, it wasn’t long after we purchased the lures that we were in our steel boat using them at our favorite fishing spot. At first, we were using the them wrong. We just assumed that they were bulky weedless spoons. So, we fished them as such.

No strikes.

Then by accident, my cousin over-casted and landed his Moss Boss on the top of some thick lily pads. I chuckled to myself and whispered, “Nice cast cousin.”

He began to reel in anticipating a pending snag. What happened next immortalized the moment in my mind for years to come.

Suddenly, the the lily pads exploded and my cousins reel began to sing. A sweet largemouth bass had inhaled the Moss Boss. After the fight, we moved closer to the weeds and purposely cast our Moss Bosses into the vast mass lily pads that filled the shallow bay.

Weeds began to fly.

We found that the presentation became even more enticing if we paused a quick, noisy retrieve. The more splash the lure on the retrieve, the more strikes it attracted. The fishing was awesome!

I tried one last summer. It still worked. I think Heddon makes ‘em.

Isn’t time you took your boss fishing?!

Fishing and hunting is more about the people you are in the outdoors with, then the fish or game you catch. This is a outdoor truth I learned from fishing and hunting with my father and grandfather at an early age. Whether, I am fishing the back country of a Algonquin Park or the lakes and rivers of my hometown Huntsville, ON the story behind every fish and game animal is better shared with friends. Blogging is the way in which I can share the truths, the teachable moments, and the incredible memories of every outdoors trip.
