Have You Seen These Hunters?
I have multiple reactions to this video advertisement for a hunting game on the Xbox 360. It is a year or two old, so I apologize if this has gone around the block already. This is the first time I have seen this (I have NEVER seen it on TV either) and, for the most part, I laughed through the entire thing.
That was until the surprise and brutal (perhaps funny) ending. I kept thinking how wrong this “portrayal” of hunters really is. I mean, who hunts with noisy pots and pans attached to their back? Where is the hunter orange? They have their guns up and are aiming through their scopes before they even know what their target is. This a major contradiction to the caveats of safe firearm handling. It’s NEVER funny when somebody accidentally gets shot.
The two characters in the video ad look more like poachers to me. They have IDIOT written all over their faces.
My minor objections being said, it is laughable. Remember the time when Indiana Jones opts for his sidearm (instead of a his fists) when confronted with a sword wielding enemy. I think we all laughed at that moment. In case your forgot what I am talking about, I came across that section of the Indiana Jones movie on YouTube.
Thoughts on either video?
Kinda like you, I was amused and repulsed at the same time.
Given the current political climate and the loss of hunters (and support for hunting), I hate seeing the perpetuation of these negative stereotypes. In the context of the commercial, it may seem relatively harmless, but in the bigger picture it doesn’t do hunting or hunters any favors.
On the other hand, I have made similar jokes and played on the same stereotypes myself. I guess I have to wonder if it’s the same double-standard that allows those within a population group to poke fun at themselves while forbidding anyone else to do the same thing.
And the ad did elicit a giggle or two when I watched it again.

Not at all fond of that video. The hunters are portrayed as gap toothed rednecks, who aren’t following any of the rules of safe hunting. Don’t even get me started about the guy getting shot at the end.
The fact that this is a commercial for a game produced by Cabela’s makes it even worse. That company is supposed to understand and respect hunters!
O.k., I think I’ll be coming back to this topic on the blog I write next week. I’ve got some issues with this apparently. I do find it odd that I’ve never seen this before. I wonder if it was pulled because hunters objected?
