Battle of the Brains
I chuckled over this quote I found about fishing. The quotes goes as follows:
There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process. ~ Paul O’Neil, 1965
It even applies well to hunting. Despite our best attempts, nature seems to always get the better of us. My curiosity about this quote led me to google search for the relative sizes of animal brains to human brains. I focused on finding some pics of deer, trout, and human brains. Generally speaking, the larger the brain, the smarter the organism. Whoever said that may not be an angler or
hunter.
You name it – and I have been outwitted by it. One flyfishing angler describes this discrepancy by using a term called Smartness Scale in an article called, How Smart Is A Trout? Jimmy D. Moore, states that,
“For Trout intelligence compared to that of a Fly Fisher, I offer the scientific results below:
Length in inches X Brain Weight % by Body Weight = Smartness Scale Number
Trout – 12” X 1 oz % by 8 oz = 1.50
Average fly fisher – 71” X 48 oz % by 2960 oz = 1.15
1.50 – 1.15 = .35 points higher on the smartness scale for the Trout.”
Read the rest of his article HERE. (Keep in mind – I know it’s not truly scientific)
Suddenly, I don’t feel so smart anymore. For those of you would like to do something about their brain capacity visit THIS SITE for some information and exercises.
Increase the odds.

Well, that’s a bit depressing. I would have assumed I’m at least smarter than a fish.
Although, judging from the small number I’ve caught versus the number I’ve hooked, I’d say that might be in some doubt.
