Bullet Proof Buck

Big Buck

Big BuckSomewhere between Spiers’ cut line and grandpa’s pond is a bullet proof buck. The guys in our hunt camp always take time to remember the thick-beamed buck that dad missed at point blank range. I know if he reads this post this distance to the buck will be contested.

Despite this possible protest, the short story surrounding this buck begins on a cold, frosty and perfect deer hunting morning.

You know the kind.

Blue sky. Frosted, crunchy ground cover. No wind. Cold neck and nose. It was perfect. The moral amongst the ‘boys’ was high as we tried to quietly get off our ATV’s and make our way up a 4 ft bank to Spiers’ line. This is where the property owner cleared the trees along a road allowance. It also intersects the corners of grandpa’s lot.

As we all made our way up along the cleared section of bush, dad abruptly stated, “Step back boys.”

Kyle and I reacted to his strange comment by stepping backward a few steps. The three of us had been walking side by side. When we looked up to see why dad had asked us to step backwards the shooting started.

A huge buck was standing broadside on the cleared section on the line/road! Very casually, the buck looked at dad and did a full 180 degree turn and then, walked back into the bush.

It was unscathed.

To this day we are unsure where dad was aiming. He says he was shooting at the brown haired brute. The other guys doubt it. Yet, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say publicly that the deer must have been bulletproof. Probably deaf as well. We were able to drive 3 ATV’s into it’s realm, load our guns, plan our hunt and walk across the crunchy leaves without scaring it away.

Let’s hope there is an expiry date on Kevlar shielding.

It only seems to be a built in feature of the really big ones…

I’ve known a couple bullet proof deer in my day. Arrow resistant ones as well.

If the buck is as big as you say, your dad probably wasn’t the only one. Maybe the buck really was bullet proof!
