Upgraded To WordPress 2.3

wordpress_upgradeI just upgraded to Version 2.3 “Dexter” of WordPress. Surprisingly, all went very well. I simply did the following,

  • Downloaded the NEW version of WordPress -Click Here-
  • Backed up my current installation on the server as per their instructions -Click Here-
  • Unzipped their download on my mac.
  • Opened my FTP program (For a great mac FTP program -Click Here-)
  • I found the appropriate folder on my server where my blog is (ie. yourdomain.com/blog)
  • Dragged the new files over the old ones and watched the transfer
  • Make sure you merge contents of the “content” folder as this could erase templates and photos etc.
  • IMPORTANT – After files transfered, I visited the appropriate update url (as instructed by wordpress) on my server [ie. yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php]
  • After the previous step, I checked out my blog and PRESTO all was well.
  • The new version changes the way it ‘organizes’ categories. Some old plugins may cause some ‘error’ codes in areas where you present categories on your blog (ie. sidebar). I only had the issue with an older plugin that presented my archives in a cool way. I had to shut off that plugin.

Keep in mind that upgrading can be fickle. It worked for me, but it may not work as easily for you. FOLLOW THE OFFICIAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM WORDPRESS and BACK-UP your installation.

I have not noticed any obvious differences (other than the preview of your post is done differently) – don’t rush it.

WordPress is an excellent piece of coding and software.

I have been hesitant to upgrade because of a couple of my plugins I use have know n issues with WordPress 2.3. I guess I will have to break down eventually though.

We are contemplating switching the GSI blog to WordPress. I’ve heard good things about it.
