Un-Scientific Deer Call Experiment
I was driving by a field (on my way to work) that had two does feeding in it. I happened to have my deer call in the car and pulled over to give it a try.
I started on the ‘young buck’ setting and only managed to grab their attention for a few moments before they continued feeding again.
Then, I tried the ‘mature buck’ setting. After, the first short grunt, their heads picked right up and they stared intently in my direction. After about 3o seconds, they went back to eating again. I grunted again with the same results.
My final bag of tricks included using the ‘doe’ setting. They were instantly interested and both started to walk towards me after each grunt. Their tongues were out and smacking at the air as they approached my car. They stopped within 10 feet of the car before they were scared away by my movements from inside the car.
Take from that what you will. I suppose I can’t sue this company now…
It would take some repeat results to draw any conclusions, but it may appear that mature buck grunts really tweak the curiosity of does. A grunt could buy you some time for a better shot. A doe bleat may actually cause does to investigate.
Anybody have any insight into their reactions?
I fully realize that this is far from scientific – it was all just fascinating to me.

I tried it on a big buck today…my luck ran out…I shot some video and I will post it later.
I think I need one of them. I do have to say that I have had some pretty good success with deer calls. They seem to work most of the time.
No lawsuit??? I’m sure you can find something to blame them for!
I bet that ‘experiment’ was a lot of fun! Sounds like you have a nice bag of tricks there.
