All-Star Walleye Lures

subscribe_cover.gifIn Ontario-Out-Of-Doors magazine, James Smedley, writes and article titled, A Matter of Confidence. The article can be found in the May 2007 edition. What I appreciated about the article was that if focused entirely on the 6 favorite walleye lures used by their pros. I thought I would list the lures that ‘made the cut’ on their article.

Yum June Bug TubeGord Ellis, depends on a 4-inch Yum June Bug Tube on a 3/8-ounce jig. For tips on fishing with a tube bait click here.

Colorado Spinner RigDrew Myers, banks on a Three-way swivel rig (or Wolf River Rig). He attaches a bell sinker to the one ‘end’ of the 3-way swivel and a colorado blade spinner with 3 beads on the remaining swivel attachment. Every Spring, we fish a northern Ontario lake with this kind of rig (minus the 3-way swivel). It is the only way we can catch walleye in this lake. Plugs, spoons, artificial baits do not work. This rig would top my list.

Berkley Jerk ShadLuigi De Rose, fishes a 5-inch Berkley pearl Jerk Shad. I have never used this ‘rig’ before. It should work on any hungry fish.

Deep Down Husky JerkThe next lure may prove my lack of lure ‘saviness’, but I had never heard of this lure before reading about it in this article. Lonnie King, works a Deep Down Husky Jerk (DHJ12 – Clown Finish) when he needs to haul in picky walleye. For some jerk bait tactics click here.

ac_sunfish.jpgThe next lure is no stranger to tackle boxes. I think it was one of the first lures I owned. James Smedley, ties-on an AC Shiner 375 (Sunfish finish) to boost his walleye confidence. For tips on fishing the AC shiner click here.

Veg E JigThe last lure in the line-up is the strangest looking to me. It is known as the Veg E Jig. Yum GrubThis jig gets paired with a lime and chartreuse Yum grub. This lure is punching weedbeds and lake-bottom ‘greenery’ without the constant annoyance of removing weeds from your presentation. Here is an article on fishing this rig.

Hope you find something that works on your lake or river!
