I Know They’re Out There!

Fly Fishing MuskokaA little adventure from my fly fishing blog… On my way home from work today I convinced my wife to let me spend 1/2 hour fishing a couple of new spots I scouted out last fall (late winter) on the Muskoka River. Fortunately, they were public access spots and I could drive withing feet of the banks. I ran into a guy the other day who told me that the lake trout were making their way up the river following an anticipated  smelt run. This guy had hooked into a lake trout and speckled trout the night before.

Fly Fishing SnagI put on a light colored “minnow” type fly to match the color of smelt and began to work a couple of spots in the river. I even kept my tie on to spice up the event. At the second spot I tried (on a rock shelf) I thought I hooked into something.

I did. It was a stick.

Time and a speaking engagement forced me to end my scouting trip. I know they are out there – and the weekend is coming. Bring on the Spring!
