It’s that time of the year again. We start to see pictures of white baby seal pups and celebrities (who eat greens only or they think that their meat products are magically sealed, packaged, and delivered without bloodshed) pushing for an end to the baby killing.
Germany has stirred the pot in threatening to ban the import of seal products because they feel that the way the animals are killed is in-humane. I wonder how they (German government) think that animals are killed for human consumption? They are falling for PETA and United States Humane Society propaganda that highlight bloody snow and hunters killing seals. By the way, hunting baby seals has been illegal for some time know. Don’t fall for the cute, cuddly baby seal pics and teary-eyed movie stars weeping for these babies. The seal population is also increasing and healthy. This is what you can expect from sound wildlife management programs.
The east coast seal hunt is closely managed and supervised. Hunters are watched to make sure kills are humane. The irony in that statement is strange to me. Humane kills? If you eat meat products, you have killed (directly or in directly). At that moment, when an animal dies, the last thing they (the animal) is concerned about is the ‘humaneness’ of the event. It has to be a horrible experience. That is part of life. It is bloody. It can look sad. But that is they way it is. I don’t want to convince you to like it, but just remember it happens. Let’s get one thing straight,
“PETA and the United States Humane Society’s goal is rid the world of hunting and meat products. The next target could be your Christmas turkey dinner!”
Visit their websites and you will see what I mean. If you dig through the links and pictures of cute animals you will find their somewhat hidden mandate.
With the coverage on the seal hunt, people who are not used to seeing the blood and the killing that comes with meat consumption can be easy prey to these anti-animal killing groups. I think the general public is smart enough not too-but sometimes I wonder. Especially, now that Germany wants to ban the seal imports. This would impact the lives of 1000’s of east coast families. Something that never seems to matter to anti-killing groups.
The Canadian government has proposed to ‘push-back’ at negative seal hunting press. The CBC reports,
“Rideout said the sealing industry remains an integral part of the economy and culture of the province. “I am very displeased with Germany’s intentions,” he said in a release. “The annual seal fishery is a sustainable harvest based on solid science, full utilization of the animal, and humane harvesting methods where there is zero tolerance for any inhumane practices.” Entire Article Here
Acutally, Germany is being hypocritical in their stand. The CNW Group reports that,
Rob Cahill, Executive Director of the Fur Institute of Canada, says, “We find it interesting that Germany hunts seven times more deer and wild boar each year, for their high-end restaurant market, than seals that are hunted in Canada. The hunting methods are virtually the same, as 90% of the Canadian seal hunt is conducted with rifle.”
Tell the movie stars to stick to acting and the anti-killing groups to take a reality pill. There is MORE to eat than carrots.

Why do you assume that people who want to stop the seal hunt belong to animal rights groups only? I am a regular citizen who thinks that bashing a seal’s head to rip off its pelt and leave the carcass to rot is beneath us, humans.
The seal hunt might be a source of income for some people but only because they have over-fished everything else to depletion. Forgive me if I’m not too concerned about their livelihoods.
Your article was repulsive and your views, archaic. Just because something has been done for hundreds of years, it does not mean that it is sacred or ethical.
I am with Germany and everyone else who wants to bring this disgusting seal slaughter to an end.
I am a Canadian, and proud of it, but not blind. I can see our mistakes.
Seals like a lot of things are a renewable resource and to end years of tradition and livelihood for many people because one thinks its barbaric is ridiculous. You may say you’re not an animal rights wacko but you sure sound like one. What is so wrong with harvesting a seal for it’s pelt? There are also many other uses for seals besides their pelts;
Seals have been hunted for food, fuel, shelter, fur and other products for hundreds of years. DFO is no longer involved in product support or promotion activities, but the department does encourage the fullest possible commercial use of seals. Seal products consist of leather, oil, handicrafts, and meat for human and animal consumption as well as seal oil capsules rich in Omega-3.
Man harvests countless other species everyday for food, shelter, clothing etc. The big problem is the definition of “Humanely Killing” keeps getting redefined by many who live a la la land where all killing is wrong but that’s not a realistic view something has to die in order for life to continue. I as an American join with the majority of Canadians that see nothing wrong with the practice of seal hunting.
