I had never heard about the fish called the pink salmon. That was until my friend, Gary, gave me some video footage of his first encounter with this unique fish. The moment was shared with his brother and Gary’s son.
Pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, were introduced into Lake Superior when, in 1956, about 21,000 fingerlings were released by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. By 1979 pink salmon had descended into Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
They are the strangest looking fish because of their characteristic hump on their ‘back’. Gary and company were fishing in Northern Ontario during a spawning run of the Pink Salmon. The video is about 5.5 megs – not recommended for dial-up connections.
