So there I was. Just minding my own business when I started talking to a logger who has seen many remote areas of Huntsville. I started to share with him about my dislike for the winter because it acts as barrier for me to fly fish until spring. Somewhere in the conversation I asked him if ever came across a creek, stream, or pond that held trout.
When he told me he did everything went slow motion from there on in. Visions of surface dancing trout flashed into my mind as I managed to sputter out,
Could you tell me where these spots are?”
I expected him to say no. Without hesitation, he said, “Sure, but they are on private land so you will have to secure permission before you go. I can think of 2 speckled trout holes you would be interested in.”
He then described each area to me in detail.
One of them is narrow creek that I drive beside on a regular basis. It empties into the Muskoka River. This is good news for those of us in Huntsville who wonder if there are speckled trout coming into the Muskoka River. The second one is pond not far from Huntsville that will take some phone calls and some luck to get permission.
The problem with good intel is that I am going to have to wait until spring and ice-out to try them out. I drove by the creek that he told me about last night – a little preseason scouting.
Now just 60 more days of waiting and visions of trout jumping with one of my little flies delicately hooked to its mouth.
