Eighteen-year old Hayder Kadhim launched his campaign Wednesday afternoon in Montreal, demanding tighter limits on handguns, a ban on assault rifles, and the preservation of the national gun registry.
I feel bad that I can not agree Hayder because of the injuries he sustained from the Dawson shootings. Yet, he stepped into the spotlight so I thought I would share why I can not agree with his initiative.
The ‘stricter’ gun control he is calling for has already cost tax payers over 2 BILLION DOLLARS! Even after spending this HUGE amount of money on NEW gun control it was ineffective at stopping this tragic event.
What I think Hayder wants (if I read between the lines) is a TOTAL ban on guns. The limits on handgun use locations and automatic weapon restrictions are already in place. They have been for SOME time now! I suppose the Government could ban guns…except the only people that benefit from this are criminals. Law abiding citizens (the ones that would turn in their guns) would be helpless against those of the criminal population who WOULD take advantage of this. 911 calls would be known as ‘Dial-A-Prayer’ hotlines for those of us who came face-to-face with a gun-toting criminal.
The current gun (non-restricted) control measures already have requirements that law-abiding citizens must abide by. There are already mandatory gun safety courses, safe storage rules, photo-I.D. cards, background and reference checks. Sadly, most of these things existed before the Liberal Government wasted 2 billion dollars on plastic cards.
Imagine where we would be if Law Enforcement agencies and community social programs saw large portions of this 2 billion dollars. This money could have been used on gun-screening security systems to help protect schools and public areas.
I can not begin to imagine the anguish you and all the other victims (including families) are currently experiencing. I CAN understand the purpose of your endeavour. Maybe you could challenge the Government to install detection devices in schools. If you get your meeting ask them to increase funding to cash strapped Law Enforcement agencies. Perhaps there would be some social programs that you could spearhead that would educate children of the dangers of firearms and their responsible use.
This may make the impact you are looking for. All the best on your recovery.

Will “restricted rifles” now be banned altogether?
This could spell serious trouble for Stephen Harper, outside of the major urban centres. For many decidedly un-metrosexual Conservative Party supporters, taking a solid stand against the 2 billion dollar Farmer Bob Rifle Registry… is seen as an issue of “principle”.
