I am designing a new kind of bait with a unique shape that drives bass crazy! Picture a mini-loaf of plastic Wonder Bread with treble hooks on either end. If I have my way it will hit shelves this fall. Let me explain…
I was trolling from Vernon Lake to the Huntsville Town Dock yesterday. I only caught a couple of ‘smallies’ along the way. When we tied up to the dock and returned with ice cream, I started to cast my rapala from the dock to the bridge pylons across the way. After a few minutes of casting this guy comes up to me and tells me I should cast where they were feeding seagulls some bread. My response, which was somewhat audible, was, “Sure. That’s all I need is a seagull flying away with my lure hooked to its beak in front of all these people.” He chuckled and my curiousity led me to where he was pointing. Some kids were throwing bits of bread into the river (off the dock) and there were swirls and flashes in the water under the bread. At this point, I am thinking that sunfish or panfish are swarming the bread bits and I was about to turn back when I saw a MONSTER bass attack the bread bit. Then another! Springing into action, I launched my green rapala into the frey and briefly ‘hooked’ one of the behemoths. The bass spit it out for a piece of bread! After 5 minutes of various presentations, I could not hook into the monsters I saw schooling beneath the dock.
I cleared my schedule for tonight where I will return to this public dock with a bucket of worms and crawfish in case my loaf of bread does not work. I wonder if whole wheat or white makes a diffference?
