I spent the afternoon on Vernon Lake on Tuesday. The pike were not interested in the standard fare we were throwing out to them. That was until I put on some PIKE cryptonite!
For those wondering what pike cryptonite is, your search is over. A mepps scyclops is all you need.
I was using a silver #3 and while trolling a weedy bay on vernon I battled a large pike for 15 minutes. When we finally got into the boat (thanks to the fine netting of my wife) it measured 33 inches and was probably 10 – 12 lbs.
Shortly after this monster, the scyclops hooked another smaller pike on a rocky island point.
I know many anglers ‘tip’ these mepps spoons with small minnows or minnow tails with great success. The scyclops is acutally great to troll with because the action is so unique that you can tell when it is ‘weeded up’ or tangled on the line and treble hook.
Go get em!
