Gorilla Braid: Not Bad.

gbraid.jpg I threw on some Berkely Gorilla Braid for this season’s Triple L fishing trip to the North. It worked great but I had to adapt to some small quirks when I first began to fish with it.
Gorilla Braid is different than monofilament and flourocarbon in appearance and feel. It reminded of dual-colored, twisted thread you might in your grandma’s closet. Feels like it too.

Tangles like it.

I had just completed my first cast and begun the reel “in” process when I noticed a massive ‘bird’s nest’ of line encasing my reel. It found every crack possible on my reel because of its small diameter. I was out of action for 20 minutes. Looking back on it, I am sure it was simply because I had spooled too much on when I put it on before the trip. It never tangled after that.

It does not stretch. Period. Make sure you react quickly to a snag. Keep your finger near your bail. The trade off is great sensitivity and no memory (at least I never noticed any). I could feel so much more than I could with mono. The difference was eye-opening!

I quickly found out that it sinks. I had to use a smaller bell sinker, than the other guys because it runs much deeper. This would be beneficial when trolling and the extra depth is needed.

It is a little more difficult to knot with but not impossible.

I’ll keep it on for now. Think about giving it a shot.
