In an experiment to determine the viability of certain salmon ‘crosses’, the fry of these crossed salmon were placed in special backpacks for a 2.5 hour tour of duty.
The goal was a tributary of the Big Salmon River where they were released. CBC reports that:
A PhD student from Memorial University in Newfoundland is taking the issue of salmon conservation into his own hands.
Wilke and his colleagues carried the baby salmon in backpacks, hiking two and a half hours through the woods. They’ll return to the river in 40 days to see how many survived.

Some people get all the cool jobs! I hope this works out for the salmon and researchers. I wonder if the backpacks are available for public purchase? Some fish ‘on reserve’ in a guy’s pack could come in handy when backpacking through Algonquin Park.
