Zebra Mussels Eradicated!

zebra_1.jpg Water and Woods News reports that the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) have won an important battle against Zebra Mussels.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which spear-headed this effort, along with the numerous partner agencies and organizations involved, are to be applauded for doing what no other state in the nation has been able to do: successfully eradicate an established zebra mussel population from a large open body of water.

This initiative may help us win back our Ontario Lakes from this foreign invader. The article mentions that concentration of the chemical used was well below any levels that may harm humans.  It did not say how this chemical will impact the natural ecosystems within a lake body.  I would like to see some more stats on that before hailing ultimate victory.

It is a start.
