I just received a newsletter from the people at North American Hunting Club. One of the news items said the Alberta was cancelling their Grizzly hunt:
The Alberta Department of Sustainable Resources Development (DSRD) announced late last week that it’s decided to suspend the province’s annual spring grizzly bear hunting season for 3 years while it attempts to estimate the province’s grizzly bear population.
Apparently they are taking some time to get a clear idea of actual bear numbers. Is this a good thing? I don’t like to see hunts get cancelled, but IF the population is at risk and honorable science is used to determine that the population is at risk – then I think hunters should roll with it. Hunters should be asking how they can be part of the solution. If the low numbers are part of the cry of anti-hunting groups with an agenda, Alberta should be careful. It could smack of Ontario’s spring bear hunt cancellation blunder.
